The Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) on Monday said it has decided to pay special attention to volunteerism to increase the number of volunteers to five million by the next year.

New budget to increase poverty: PEW

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said taxation measures expected to be introduced in the upcoming budget will add to prevalent poverty in the country.
There would be no significant growth in the GDP due to depressed economic situation as authorities continue to focus on short term measures ignoring long-term strategies, it said.
The budget of the fiscal year 2014-15 will be focused on mobilising revenue from the existing taxpayers with little effort to broaden the shrinking tax base, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
Salaried class and corporate entities would be forced to pay additional Rs 250 billion to reduce the deficit as government would continue to prefer indirect taxation which is around 61 per cent of the whole collection, he said.

Member National Assembly Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh has said government will fulfil its agenda of economic reforms by the next fiscal to unleash an era of stability and prosperity.
He said that growth rate would be over five percent while the budget deficit would be below five percent which would be materialised through broadening of tax net and reducing unnecessary expenditures.

Kashmiri hydro potential can bridge power deficit
The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said lack of funding has reduced speed of development in Azad Jammu Kashmir.
Almost all the sectors including health, education, infrastructure, tourism and industries continue to struggle which has added to unemployment and other issues, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
Talking to Arif Mughal, Advisor on Information to the Prime Minister of AJK, he said that the privilege of getting quality education outside AJK is limited while those from the lower-middle class and poor families have little options.
Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that there is over 8,000MW of hydro potential in AJK which is more than the entire national power deficit.

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Tuesday said attack on an anchor is the beginning of a devastating conspiracy to transform Army and Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) into ineffective institutions.

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Monday criticised the proposal to shut down CNG filling stations in Punjab for two months to provide additional natural gas to power houses.
Terming the move as anti-masses, it said that captive power plants (CPPs) that have inflicted a loss of over Rs 400 billion on country in the last six years should be closed to reduce load shedding.
Discontinuing gas supply to unproductive CPPs and provision to gas to efficient power plants will boost power production by 500 MW reducing the intensity of energy crisis to benefit masses, industry, fertiliser sector and masses, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

ISLAMABAD : Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Friday assailed double standards of tax authorities for penalizing business community of federal capital while sparing the traders of Rawalpindi and other cities.
After failing to achieve targets, FBR has started pursuing its tested policy of ignoring tax evaders while squeezing taxpayers and it has started harassing the business community of Islamabad.
PEW chief Dr Murtaza Mughal said that over a dozen popular outlets had been raided with the help of police to confiscate record and computers and cases registered against their owners for dodging tax.
Interestingly, no action has been taken against any trader in Rawalpindi, or any other city of country which reflects mal-intentions of the tax collectors, he noted.

Powerful bureaucracy foils Govt’s CNG move

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Tuesday said bureaucracy has frustrated the plan of the federal government to provide relief to masses by providing CNG seven days a week.
The petroleum ministry tried to fulfil the pre-poll promise of the PML-N to end queues at the CNG filling stations by introducing a new schedule to provide CNG for seven days a week to the masses.
However, the decision hadn’t gone down well with the bureaucracy and the SNGPL reduced pressure of the natural gas being provided to the CNG station to an extent that the outlets could hardly operate, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
The move has resulted in long queues at all the CNG outlets hindering traffic and wasting precious time of the motorists, he said.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Friday said Pakistan’s meat processing sector offers good return therefore local and foreign investors should consider investment in it. Argentine, one of the largest meat exporters, is ready to upgrade Pakistan’s meat processing industry which has a great potential, it said.
Pakistan can figure prominently on the expanding global halal market with little effort in the right direction, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
A high-powered delegation from Argentine is expected to reach Pakistan soon to study the meat processing sector, he informed.
Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that around 35 million people raise livestock that contributes over 50 per cent of agriculture value-addition and over 11 per cent to the GDP which is far below than the actual potential. Demand for meat has been increasing due to population growth, urbanisation and rising income but productivity has remained sluggish, he said.

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Wednesday said Saudi gift of $1.5 billion is an unconditional grant which has helped cash-strapped Pakistani government stabilise economy.
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have warm ties since long but the gift ignited immediate concern among opposition politicians, local and foreign journalists, and some security experts which are baseless, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
He said that Saudi gift has stabilised currency, reduced inflation, condensed debt burden and improved forex reserves but it perturbed many ill-informed circles.
Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that many opposition leaders were also influenced by the conspiracy theories and started attacking government while raising questions without bothering to find reason behind the Saudi move.

An urgent decision is needed as delay on the part of regulators of electricity in the energy starved notion is taking toll on the limping economy, it said.
Sugar millers have been trying since 2009 to get upfront tariff of 11 cents per unit approved so that they can start producing electricity by using bagasse and coal, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that in 2009 the government approved 19 cents tariff for rental power plants and 14 cents tariff for IPPs but refused to allow sugar millers tariff of 11 cents despite the fact that co-generation would have no impact on forex reserves as no imports were involved.

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Friday expressed fears of Thar-like drought situation in the Rawalpindi within next few years.
Availability of water which is essential to all forms of life will be reduced dramatically within years in the city and cantonment areas of Rawalpindi, which would be worse than the ongoing energy crisis, it said.
Realising the threat, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) asked the Punjab Government to construct a dam on Soan River at Daducha which will provide 25 million gallon water to the city daily for next 50 years, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
JICA said that Rawal Dam is to complete its expected life soon while the requirement of Rawalpindi is expected to touch 80 million gallon per day in the next twenty years therefore a dam on best available location of Daducha should be constructed immediately.

Strengthening rupee to improve overall economic situation
The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Wednesday said continued retreat of the US dollar is one of the great achievements of the government which will help stabilise economy, tame inflation and restore investor’s confidence.
The rising rupee will further push the US dollar down to set new records but stabilising exchange rate which has remained volatile since long will be a test for the economic managers, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
It appears that the finance minister who recently claimed to bring dollar back at Rs98 is fulfilling his commitment which will cut oil import bill, bring down prices of imported commodities and have a positive impact on every person in Pakistan.

Equal treatment to honest consumers of electricity and thieves is unacceptable, it said.
The people and departments that have developed the habit of not paying their bills should have no right to use electricity, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
Around 1.4 billion people are living without electricity in the world with 800 million of them are from south Asia, he said.
Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that 2.6 billion people still use solid fuels globally as general access to energy is yet to find place in the UN Millennium Development Goals.

Pakistan must improve its deteriorating ranking in food security index as almost half of the country’s population remains food insecure, it said.
Every individual has a right to physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food on consistent basis that fulfils the dietary needs, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
Affordability, availability and quality of the food in Pakistan needs serious review as hunger is rising despite increase agriculture output which indicates lack of serious efforts on the part of the government.
Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that countries like India, Sri Lanka, Angola, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Malawi, Nicaragua, Niger, Vietnam, and India have performed better than Pakistan.
Government should think seriously about providing cover to over 61 million food insecure people which is a major national issue as rising food prices, floods, poverty, conflicts, terrorism, energy crisis, economic slowdown and political instability are some factors behind hunger.

Call to boost GB petro storage capacity by 400 pc
The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Wednesday called for increasing petroleum storage capacity in the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) to avoid any future problems.
Expressing concern over the current situation, it called for boosting GB petroleum storage capacity by 400 per cent which can help masses as well as armed forces in case of an emergency.
Talking to a group of businessmen from Gilgit-Baltistan, Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW said that closure of main road leading to GB has become order of the day due to landsliding and law and order issues.
The situation results in scarcity of fuel and profiteering by certain elements which can be avoided by improve local fuel storage, he said.
Moreover, mega water reseviour projects and revamping the Karakoram highway would require atleast one hundred and fifty thousand litres of diesel per day which cannot be satisfied by the existing infrastructure which can handle only one million litres or demand of three days.

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday slammed propaganda against government’s coal power generation plans terming it an attempt of powerful oil lobby to further tilt energy mix in favour of imported fossil fuel.
Converting furnace oil based power plants to Thar coal can help save around six billion dollars being spent on import of furnace oil which is around 40 per cent of the energy mix, it said.
Oil import bill in the current fiscal is set of cross $ 15 billion due to CNG suspention widening current account deficit has already crossed mark of two billion dollars in the first seven months of the current fiscal as compared to 441 million last year, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
