The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said country can save electricity worth Rs 650 million annually if the existing automated teller machines (ATMs) are converted on solar power.
ATMs deriving energy from the sun can also work without air-conditioning; one such machine can save up to Rs 1.5 lakh annually.
It also called for installation of ATMs with biometric authentication to benefit the lesser literate people in cities and countryside.
We have around 6800 online branches, 4500 ATMs and one crore users of plastic cards. Their majority resides in urban areas; now we should also plan to benefit rural population,” said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
Despite expansion plans, usually banks prefer maximum penetration in urban areas, he said.
Therefore, villagers have to cover a long distance to the nearby banks during office hours to withdraw money. They also face problems related to counting and verification etc.
Moreover, solar ATMs can settle the issue of unpredictable power supply in cities and villages. “We must have ATMs that function without PIN numbers and grid connectivity,” he stressed.
Currently teller machines have 56 per cent share in all electric transactions which will increase if it becomes friendly for the uneducated.
Dr. Murtaza Mughal demanded that SBP should improve traditional paper-based Retail Payment System which is still dominating the scene with over 85 pc share.
We should move towards modern electronic instruments with full awareness about risks involved. This will call for introduction of modern core banking solutions.
He said that mobile phone industry has already bypassed the usual wires, poles, roads and telephone exchanges which have benefitted people to the great extent.
These companies are earning windfall profits therefore they should come forward to convert their thousands of sites on solar power which will not only save electricity and reduce oil import bill but also help combat pollution, said Dr. Mughal.

اسلام آباد( جون 20 ) پاکستان اکانومی واچ کے صدر ڈاکٹر مرتضیٰ مغل نے کہا ہے کہ شمسی توانائی سے چلنے والی اے ٹی ایم مشینیں متعارف کروانے سے سالانہ 65 کروڑ روپے کی بچت ہو سکتی ہے۔ اس سے بجلی کے علاوہ تیل کے درامدی بل اور ماحولیاتی آلودگی میں بھی کمی آئے گی۔اس وقت ملک میں بینکوں کی آن لائن برانچوں کی تعداد6800ہے،ایک کروڑ افراد کے پاس کریڈٹ یا ڈیبٹ کارڈ ہیںاور 4500 اے ٹی ایم مشینیںکام کر رہی ہیں۔ایک شمسی اے ٹی ایم سالانہ ڈیڑھ لاکھ کی بجلی بچا سکتا ہے۔انھوں نے کہا کہ بینک عام طور پر شہری علاقوں میں کاروبار کو ترجیح دیتے ہیںاور دیہات کے رہنے والوں کو رقم نکلوانے کے لئے دفتری اوقات میں بینک تک جانا پڑتا ہے جہاں انھیں دیگر مسائل کا سامنا بھی کرنا پڑتا ہے۔ ڈاکٹر مرتضیٰ مغل نے کہا کہ پاکستان کے عوام کی اکثریت ناخواندہ ہے اس لئے بایومیٹرک(چہرہ یا انگلیوں کے نشانات شناخت کرنے والی)اے ٹی ایم مشینوں کی تنصیب ضروری ہے جس کے لئے دیہی علاقوں کو ترجیح دینی ہو گی۔انھوں نے کہا کہ کمپیوٹر پر ہونے والے لین دین میں اے ٹی ایم مشینوں کا تناسب 56فیصد ہے جو ان پڑھ افراد کو سہولت دینے کی صورت میں بڑھ جائے گا۔ڈاکٹر مغل کے مطابق موبائل کمپنیاں کافی منافع کما رہی ہیں اگر وہ اپنے ہزاروں ٹاور شمسی توانائی کے زریعے چلائیں تو ملک و قوم کو کروڑوں روپے کا اضافی فائدہ ہو گا۔
