New Year to bring more sufferings to masses
The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Tuesday said majority of Pakistanis are unlikely to enjoy the New Year.
The political struggle is expected to eat up most of the attention of the coalition government with little time and funds left for welfare of the needy, it said.
Leaders will continue to undergo internal as well as external political pressures while common man will have to brave ever-increasing financial squeeze, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
He said that the year ahead will be tough for middle class and poor who have already been hurt by insurgencies, floods, Asia’s highest inflation, uncertainty, energy crisis and overall economic depression.
People who have already been compromising on food, health, and education will learn to live with less amid price shocks and natural as well as artificial tragedies, he said adding that rising household budgets will be continue to be a major issue during 2011.
The proposed taxes, developmental cuts and sluggish economic growth will keep on to bite while those who have wealth would go on to enjoy unjustified privileges, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal.
Policy rates will continue to climb while production will slide making things difficult for everyone, he said.
Uncertainty, job insecurity, volatile labour market, loss of income and worries among low-income working class may result in additional problems for the unpopular government.
The overall scenario is depressing and the possible outcome could be more frustrating resulting in enhanced political disorder, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal.
The economic managers of the government are expected to continue supporting profit-making lobbies, while a part of masses will continue to trust hollow slogans that will never translate into reality.
He said adding that government needs to do something for poor otherwise they will have a bleaker outlook.

اسلام آباد پاکستان اکانومی واچ کے صدر ڈاکٹر مرتضیٰ مغل نے کہا ہے نیا سال عوام کے لئے کوئی خوش خبری نہیں لائے گا۔حکومت کی توجہ سیاسی کشمکش کی طرف رہے گی جبکہ عوام کی فلاح کے لئے وقت اور وسائل نہیں ہونگے۔سیاسی رہنما اندرونی اور بیرونی دباﺅ کا شکار رہیں گے جبکہ عوام بڑھتی ہوئی مہنگائی کے بوجھ تلے پستے رہیں گے۔دہشت گردی، افراط زر، بے یقینی اور توانائی کا بحران جاری جبکہ معیشت کی حالت پتلی رہے گی جس سے متوسط طبقہ اور غریبوں کے مسائل میں اضافہ ہو گا۔ڈاکٹر مرتضیٰ مغل نے کہا کہ عوام نے خوراک، صحت، تعلیم پرکمپرومائز کر لیا ہے اور نئے سال کے دوران انھیں مزید کھونا پڑے گا جبکہ گھر کا نظام چلانا اکثریت کے لئے بڑا مسئلہ رہے گا۔مجوزہ ٹیکس، قیمتوں میں اضافہ، فلاحی منصوبوں میں کٹوتیاںاور اشرافیہ کو بلاجواز فائدے دینے کا سلسلہ بدستور جاری رہے گا۔ ڈاکٹر مغل نے کہا کہ کارخانوں اور کاروبار کی بندش، نوکریوں سے فراغت، مالی بدحالی اور پریشانیاں حکومت کی شہرت کو مزید نقصان پہنچائیں گی جبکہ سیاسی ابتری جاری رہے گی۔حکومت کے اکنامک منیجر منافع خوروں کے مفاد کے مطابق فیصلے کرتے رہیں گے جبکہ عوام کا ایک حصہ کھوکلے نعروں کا حقیقت بننے کا منتظر رہے گا۔انھوں نے کہا اگر حکومت بدل بھی گئی تو صورتحال میں کوئی ڈرامائی تبدیلی متوقع نہیں۔ ہم خادم اور امریکہ مخدوم رہے گا جبکہ لاپتہ افراد گمشدہ ہی رہیں گے۔ اگراشرافیہ کے بجائے عوام کی فلاح کے منصوبے شروع نہ کئے گئے تو نیا سال گزشتہ سال سے زیادہ مشکل رہے گا۔
