Politicians behind reduced support for democracy
The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said that Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has failed to restore confidence of the business community.
Politics remains the favourite subject of the new PM and his Cabinet while economy continue to take a backseat because of lack of commitment to change life of ordinary people, it said.
The dejected business community which welcomed removal of former Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani in hope of stability found nothing except disappointment, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
Economic activities continue to lose momentum, economy is under renewed stress while Parliament continues to remain indifferent to miseries of masses and business community, he added.
Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that mismanagement, flight of capital, devaluation of rupee, depletion of forex reserves, repressive taxes and protecting the interests of elite suggests that government has failed to come up to the expectations of any section of society or any sector of economy.
He said that political struggle spanned over four years has adversely affected the liking for democracy among masses and business community of which a major part is long-time supporter of dictatorship which offers stability.
No other forces except politicians are responsible for dwindling support for democracy among commoners as they have been failing to deliver since years, he observed.
He said that repressive policies and harassment of investors continues unabated while record corruption has disappointed masses to an extent that patriot Pakistanis are also transferring funds abroad.
Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that there is no likelihood that Raja Pervaiz Ashraf will try seriously to fix things to put system back on track and meet the expectations of a small minority which still believes in democracy.

پاکستان اکانومی واچ کے صدر ڈاکٹر مرتضیٰ مغل نے کہا ہے کہ راجہ پرویز اشرف کی آمد سے کاروباری برادری کے اعتماد میں اضافہ نہیں ہواجبکہ بد انتظامی کے ریکارڈ قائم کرنے والے یوسف رضاگیلانی کی رخصتی پر سکھ کا سانس لینے والے تاجروں کو ناامیدی کے سوا کچھ نہیں ملا۔صورتحال میں بہتری کا کوئی امکان نظر نہیں آ رہا ہے، اقتصادی سرگرمیاں ماند پڑتی جا رہی ہیں، معیشت پر دبائو میں مسلسل اضافہ ہو رہا ہے جبکہ پارلیمنٹ عوام و تاجر برادری سے لا تعلق ایک ربڑ سٹیمپ بنی ہوئی ہے۔توانائی کے بحران، مالیاتی بدانتظامی، ٹیکسوں کے نظام، ڈالر کے فرار، روپے کی قدر میں کمی سمیت حکومت کسی بھی شعبہ یا طبقہ کی توقعات پر پورا نہیں اتر سکی ہے جس سے سرمایہ کار خوفزدہ ہو گئے ہیں۔ڈاکٹر مرتضیٰ مغل نے کہا کہ چار سال سے جاری سیاسی محاز آزائی اور عدلیہ سے عدم تعاون نے سرمایہ کاروں اور عوام کے دل میں جمہوریت کے لئے موجود نرم گوشہ ختم کر دیا ہے جبکہ آمریت کے دلدادہ افراد کی تعداد میں اضافہ ہو رہا ہے جس سے پتہ چلتا ہے کہ جمہوریت کے سب سے بڑے دشمن سیاستدان ہیں۔منتخب حکومتیں اپنی ناکامیوں اور کرپشن کے سبب عوامی تائید سے محروم ہو چکی ہیں۔ڈاکٹر مغل کے مطابق صورتحال یہاں تک بگڑ گئی ہے کہ محب وطن شہری بھی مستقبل سے مایوس ہو کر اپنا پیسہ با ہر منتقل کر رہے ہیں۔عوام پر ٹیکسوںکا بوجھ بڑھانے ، اشرافیہ کو نوازنے اورملکی و غیر ملکی سرمایہ کاروں کو ہراساں کرنے اور انکی حوصلہ شکنی کا سلسلہ جاری ہے۔راجہ پرویز اشرف اور انکی کابینہ کی ساری توجہ بھی سیاست کی طرف ہے ان حالات میں نہ تو عام آدمی کے مصائب میں کوئی کمی آئے گی نہ نظام دوبارہ پٹری پر چڑھ سکے گا۔
