The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday called for enhanced awareness and training regarding cyber crimes in Pakistan. Cyber criminals are getting sophisticated which has raised concerns.
The incidents of cyber crimes are increasing in country due to lack of awareness while the government mechanism to deal with such issues needs improvement. Masses as well as private sector seems least bothered about it.
“Systems as well as networks are not designed keeping security in mind. Internet security is considered an extra burden on budget which is a wrong belief,” said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW
Government departments, commercial institutions and private businesses lack coordination and knowledge about internet which is a great threat as in many cases bytes come before bullets, he said.
Technology is throwing new challenges but unfortunately, we are not prepared for it, he said adding that we have no mechanism in country to deal with computer related emergencies.
“Regrettably, we have no NGO dealing with internet security while there are over 100 in neighboring India” Dr. Murtaza Mughal said.
He said that in over 90 per cent cases most trusted people are found involved in cyber crimes. Remedy is available but people do not know about it.
He said that cell phones are widely being used by criminals to relieve unsuspecting masses of their money by informing them about winning a reward etc.
People can easily minimize the chances of such crimes by 99 per cent. All they have to do is to ask the anonymous caller to provide their landline number, said Dr. Mughal.
