The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said Pakistan has no future without a well developed renewable and alternative energy production system.
It will help resolve power crisis and reduce pollution and trigger economic growth which will benefit entire population.
Global warming, political issues and differences with neighbouring countries are minimising our chances to get benefits of hydropower.

There is an urgent need to promote alternative and renewable energy resources as our oil import bill is the major contributor to 14 billion dollars trade deficit, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
“We can produce 20,000 megawatts through harnessing wind power but progress on it is very slow while its global growth rate is 30 per cent,” he said.
Similarly, we are lagging behind in using solar energy from many countries including India, China and Nepal. Earth’s atmosphere absorbs more energy in one hour than the whole world uses in one year, he said.
Despite having 700km of coastline, we are yet to realise the importance and scope of Tidal energy.
Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that we have one of the biggest coal deposits in the world but share of coal in our energy-mix is insignificant.
With around 200b tonnes of coal in Thar we can produce 40,000 mv of power which can meet all of our electricity needs help us earn money through exports. It will balance country’s energy-mix and fuel country’s economic development.
Moreover, power generated through Thar coal will not be seasonal like hydropower that drops by almost 60 per cent to 2000 mw in winter.
The coal mining method must be very carefully studied and all options including clean-coal technology, underground coal gasification, installation of gas to liquids plants and power stations with zero emissions must be explored as it is a great divine gift.
Steps like energy summit, two-day weekend and closing down shops at 8 pm have proved useless, said Dr. Mughal adding that a proper strategy would help reduce energy, environmental and economic problems and improve standard of living of all Pakistanis.
