Peace pipeline has potential to transform Pakistan into an Asian Tiger. It can help resolve water dispute with India, said The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday.
Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline will not boost Iran economy and influence to a level that is unaccepted by US. Tehran will never emerge as a monopolistic supplier; it is not a wildcard in hands of Ahmadinejad.
Americans are opposing the project as they have perceived the project as a threat to their monopoly in the region but have failed to offer any alternative, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
Washington needs to understand that benefits of a cooperative strategy are always better than the dividends of a non-cooperative strategy. Persistent opposition can supplement anti-American feelings among Pakistanis, he added.
IPI can boost our relations with China and may help resolve water issue with India as New Delhi may not be able to ignore this source of energy for long. A gas-for-water deal can emerge as a believable confidence building measure.
“We need this gas, as our economy is under stress and it cannot absorb the shocks of wide swings in energy prices having serious repercussions,” said Dr. Murtaza Mughal.
Pakistan has limited ability to develop indigenous resources in the short run without compromising other critically important sectors.
Our policymakers have not developed resources that can keep pace with economic expansion resulting in great energy demand-supply gap which Iran gas can help subside.
For Pakistan, it is an economic issue but US view it as a political issue that has delayed the project since 1990 when the world’s second largest producer proposed sale of part of 974 trillion cubic feet gas.
US should stop efforts to deprive Pakistanis of their legitimate right, said Dr. Mughal.

اسلام آباد(جون 27 ) پاکستان اکانومی واچ کے صدر ڈاکٹر مرتضیٰ مغل نے کہا ہے ایرانی گیس پاکستان کو ایشین ٹائیگر بنا سکتی ہے۔ پائپ لائن کا منصوبہ اضافی آمدنی اور چین سے بہتر تعلقات کے علاوہ بھارت سے پانی کا تنازعہ حل کرنے میں بھی مدد دے سکتا ہے۔اس منصوبہ سے ایران کی معیشت اور اثر رسوخ میں اتنا اضافہ نہیں ہو گا جوکہ امریکی اجارہ داری کے لئے خطرہ بن جائے۔امریکہ اسے ایران کے ہاتھ میں ترپ کا پتہ سمجھنے اور پاکستانیوںکو ان کے جائز حق کے حصول سے محروم کرنے سے باز آ جائے ورنہ اسکے خلاف جزبات میںمزید اضافہ ہو گا۔ ڈاکٹر مرتضیٰ مغل نے کہا کہ امریکہ اس منصوبہ کی مخالفت کر رہا ہے مگر ساتھ ہی کوئی متبادل دینے کو بھی تیار نہیں ۔دوسری طرف پاکستان میں فوری طور پرتوانائی کے متبادل یا مقامی زرائع اختیار کرنے کی اہلیت نہیں ہے اور ایرانی گیس آخری آپشن لگتاہے۔انھوں نے کہا کہ ہمارے پالیسی ساز معاشی پھیلاﺅ کے مطابق توانائی کے حصول میں ناکام رہے ہیںجس سے طلب اور رسد کا بحران پیدا ہوا ہے جسے ایرانی گیس کے زریعے کم کیا جا سکتا ہے۔انھوں نے کہا کہ بھارت زیادہ عرصہ تک اس منصوبہ سے لاتعلق نہیں رہ سکتا اور گیس کے بدلہ پانی کی ڈیل سے نہ صرف ہماری معیشت ترقی کرے گی بلکہ اعتماد سازی بھی ہو گی۔ڈاکٹر مغل نے کہا کہ یہ سادہ سے معاشی معاملہ ہے جسے وائٹ ہاﺅس کے دانشور 1990سے سیاسی معاملہ سمجھنے پر بضد ہیںجو انکی لیاقت کا ثبوت ہے ۔
