Falling rupee adds fuel to crisis
The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Monday said country’s economy continues to walk a tightrope due to indifference of the authorities concerned.
The rupee is likely to witness high volatility in the coming months as economy continues to take a back seat amid too much focus of the government on the political activities before the elections.
The situation has made the chances of economic revival and outlook for the reform process cloudy, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
Rupee in under continued pressure and reform process is taking a step backwards while the opposition seems unconcerned about economic situation at this point in time, he said.
When currency depreciates against any foreign currency it has many negative impacts which must be kept in mind by authorities including the central bank.
Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that large deficits will continue to weigh on the currency and the economy unless taxation and governance is improved and borrowings are reduced.
Irrational tax system focused on excessive targets is blocking growth while resulting in economic mess and social disorder, he observed.
He said that performance of our economic managers can be gauged from larger deficits, unprecedented debt burden and increased inequalities in the society.
Burden of taxes is being systematically transferred from the rich to the poor since decades which gained new momentum since few years, he said.
He noted that law and order situation, energy scarcity and inconsistent policies have forced brain drain and pushed the business community to search for safer havens abroad, depriving the country of invaluable capital.
Country and nation cannot live with dignity unless a resolute leadership ensure good governance and transparency is ensured at all levels.

پاکستان اکانومی واچ کے صدر ڈاکٹر مرتضیٰ مغل نے کہا ہے کہ حکمرانوں کی عدم دلچسپی کی وجہ سے ملکی معیشت اور کرنسی کی حالت بگڑتی جا رہی ہے۔روپے کی گرتی ہوئی قدر نے حکومت کے بلند بانگ دعووں کو بے نقاب کر دیااور اگر مناسب اقدامات نہ کئے گئے تو آئندہ چند ماہ پاکستانی روپے کے لئے تباہ کن ثابت ہو سکتے ہیں۔حکومت اور اپوزیشن کی سازی دلچسپی سیاسی سرگرمیوں پر مرکوز ہے جس نے اقتصادی بحالی کے امکانات کو محدود کر دیا ہے۔ مرتضیٰ مغل نے کہا کہ کرنسی کی قدر کم ہونے کے منفی اثرات کے باوجود متعلقہ حکام اور مرکزی بینک نتیجہ خیز اقدام نہیں کر سکے ہیںجبکہ بڑے پیمانے پر خسارے کرنسی اور معیشت کی حالت نے سارے دعووں کی قلعی کھول کے رکھ دی ہے۔غیر معقول ٹیکس نظام اور غلط اہداف پر توجہ نے ترقی کو مسدود کرنے اور سماجی خرابی کے سوا کچھ نہیں کیا۔دہرے خسارے، بے مثال قرض اور سماجی ناہمواری نے معاشی منتظمین کی قابلیت بے نقاب کر دی ہے جو اپنی ساری مہارت ٹیکس کا بوجھ اشرافیہ سے غریبوں پر منتقل کرنے کے لئے استعمال کر رہے ہیں۔ امن وامان کی صورتحال، توانائی کی کمی اور متضاد پالیسیوں سے سرمایہ کار ملک سے بھاگ رہے ہیں۔مخلص قیادت، بہتر اسلوب حکمرانی اور شفافیت کے بغیر ملک و قوم کے لئے وقار سے جینا ناممکن ہے۔
