The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday asked the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to revisit recently imposed Cargo tax as it is hampering economic activities in the underdeveloped and militancy-hit province.
Revival and promotion of the Industrial sector and promotion of economic activities in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are linked to the provision of an enabling environment, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
Talking to a group of industrialists and exporters from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he said that industrial sector holds the key to augment income of the provincial government, reduce unemployment and combat radicalism therefore it must be supported.
He demanded of the provincial government to revisit recently-imposed one per cent Cargo Tax and proposed to levy it only on the ISAF Cargo.Dr. Murtaza Mughal also called for equal status and facilities for all the industrial estates located in the province as the newly established are geeting incentives while the long established gives a look of cemeteries.
He observed that freight subsidy for freight equalization on industrial imputs, a five-year extension in the financial package, proper gas pressure, improving shambling SME sector, and refining needlessly cumbersome regulations can bring a change.
He said that the province possess vast natural and human resources and there is a need to gradually identify and develop all these areas for attracting investment from in and outside the country.
Affordable power producing projects for industries, different incentives and provision of different funds reflects sincerity of the provincial government, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal adding that some solid steps are still awaited.
He said that Peshawar is the most important centre for trade with Afghanistan and central Asian states therefore its infrastructure must be upgraded on priority.
